Got home after midnight after Opening Ceremonies......up at 4:45 to get ready and make sure we were in for our 7:00 am shift as drivers.
We had heard that there may be another "Cobourg" volunteer out hear, but imagine our surprise when we saw Mary Ellen Hardy driving out of the parking lot as we were arriving. Not only was there another volunteer from Cobourg, but she was also one of the few Olympiad drivers, like us.
When we are dispatched to pick up and drop off someone there is usually enough time to "scope out" the hotel or venue where we will be picking them up or driving them to. It was not a particularly "hopping" day......Julie asked me to pick up a performer and drop them at their venue downtown. The pickup location was a house address in Vancouver so I was going to go find it so I wouldn't be late. Since Sue and Mary Ellen were waiting to be sent out they came with me......as we were checking out locations we got a call asking if we could drive to Whistler again......no hesitation. It was more cool this time.....a "Sea to Sky" security pass is required to get up the highway and now that the Games are running there were tons of people. It was teaming rain, but that didn't dampen our spirits (lots of pictures attached....including pictures of the memorial for the fallen Georgian luger that has been growing at the base of the Olympic rings in Whistler). Even with all the rain there was a real "buzz" everywhere....It was nice to see all the people. We didn't expect the Whistler "run" so we got home late again. The drive to Whister is beautiful....the new highway is fabulous.....but most of the time the speed limits are 60 or 70 klm per hour so it takes a couple of hours to get there from Vancouver. We always seem to be leaving before Stephy & Rocky & Gabriella are up, and returning long after they are in bed. Our initial panic about being drivers in an unfamiliar city is quickly disappearing. Vancouver is an easy city to get around in and everyone recognizes the uniforms & vehicles and are more than willing to cut us some slack.
