We had heard about all the lineups and delays....thought we'd better get to BC Place nice and early to avoid all that. Took us exactly 4 minutes to clear security (very much like airport security).....worked out really well because we then had lots of time to soak up all the excitement along with everyone else.
We each received a package that included all the items we needed for the audience participation...flashlights, candles, ponchos, Canadian flags, drum.....and then the entire crowd was shown what we were supposed to do. If you saw all the flickering lights, and heard the drums....that was us. Very cool.
The entire night was like nothing we have ever seen.....many times felt like crying....voices hoarse from screaming and howling.
Highlight of the night....when Bobby Orr was introduced, I went nuts.....one of the American ladies sitting behind us tapped me on the shoulder and asked who he was......
We made it home a little after midnight.....scheduled to drive again for 7:00 am. Until we heard on the news, we had no idea that there had been any glitches with any part of the program. It was a sustained level of excitement and anticipation that neither of us had ever experienced.
The crowd was unbelievable.
The performers ranged from exhilarating to emotional to funny to inspirational.
Another highlight....when the Georgian team entered and we all rose at once and screamed and pounded our drums out of respect for their fallen teammate.
Prior to each team entering the stadium you could see the country's flag heading up the ramp to enter the stadium......as soon as we caught a glimpse of the Canadian flag the whole place went absolutely nuts...it was deafening and a lot of fun.
Even the walk in the rain and the long transit ride home couldn't dampen the "high".
HiJohn & Sue. We watched it all on tv and I taped it as well. Mom is here and since she hadn't seen the last part of it, I played it for her last night as well. It was even better when I could fast forward through the ads and it wasn't as late at night. Each time they were showing the crowds I kept asking "do you see John and Sue?" It was really spectacular on television as well.
